Negation
Denial of absolute knowledge.
The consciousness, as accounted for by Hegel and Levinas, negate the presentation of the other. This is an important conceptual similarity because it shows the way in which consciousness grasps objects, comes to understand, as a potential threat to alterity. However in both accounts alterity is preserved. For Hegel alterity is preserved in Desire, correspondingly for Levinas in Responsibility.
